For this we constantly believe: that God, after the fearful and horrible defection of man from his obedience, did seek Adam again, call upon him,[1] rebuke his sin, convict him of the same, and in the end made unto him a most joyful promise: to wit, that the seed of the woman should break down the serpent's head [2]Â that is, he should destroy the works of the Devil. (Sctos Confession IV a)
Thoughts: This passage tells us that God did not just passively sit as the father of the Prodigal, but He went out into the far country to look for his son (us). God did not leave us alone, or destroy us (flood, fire, ice), but sought Adam again- and He seeks us again. God called on him, rebuked him for sinning, convicted him- of his sin (and hiding from God's presence), and then made him a promise of winning over evil in the end. God provided a way out of our mess. He not only pursues us- and ultimately coming down in the person of Jesus as part of that pursuit, but He also makes a promise of grace. We should claim that Jesus crushes the head of the one who brought us into evil, hurt, sin, and death. God is behind us seeking us- and God gives us something ahead of us to look forward to. God gives us real hope in life. Evil, wrong, spiritual and physical works of evil- will be destroyed.
Prayer: Lord, thank you that you pursued Adam and you pursue me, though I am unworthy. Thank you for your promise of hope and the destruction of evil. May I cleave to you and your grace.
