Therefore this is what the LORD Almighty says concerning the prophets: "I will make them eat bitter food and drink poisoned water, because from the prophets of Jerusalem ungodliness has spread throughout the land." (Jeremiah 23:15)
instructing us to deny godlessness and worldly lusts and to live in a sensible, righteous, and godly way in the present age, (Titus 2:12)
But avoid irreverent, empty speech, for this will produce an even greater measure of godlessness. (2 Timothy 2:16)
1But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. 2People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good,4treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— 5having a form of godliness but denying its power. Thoughts: What does godlessness or ungodliness mean? ἀσεβείας (asebeias) is the word that literally means irreverence or refusing to give honor to God. It shows in the way we speak our words- cursing, using God's name in vain, slandering and gossiping; It shows in our lack of worship- using our gift of time as if it were ours alone; It shows in our unbelief- hardening our hearts and refusing to submit them in reverence to God.
There are many historical examples of godlessness- without professing atheism. The days of Noah were godless. Jesus says the last days will be like Noah's days (Mt. 26). The days of the golden calf- indicated orgies along with false gods. The West suffers from deep irreverence right now. When we refuse to believe in God deep inside, it effects our actions on the outside. To believe in God requires a great deal of humility and faithfulness. To love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength requires focus- reverence- seeking Him- thirsting after Him. If we say we are godly- but love everything but God- we are in fact godless. In the last days people will have a form of godliness- but they will not have the heart or love for God. There are many in our day like that. Belief effects behavior. Our refusal to walk in godly ways effects our belief in God too.
