5Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. 6Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.
Thoughts: These verses cover two ways of witnessing that are both complimentary and build on each other. One is the way we act toward outsiders and the other is the way we speak with outsiders. First of all, there is such a thing as "outsiders." This rules out a kind of monism- that everyone is going to the same place in a different way. We are not all the same. But the good news is that anyone can become an insider. This is not an exclusive club. It is all inclusive limited to only "whosoever will." We should be wise in how we act toward those who do not believe. People watch what we do and how we do it. I know some Christians who are afraid to put a church sticker on the car because they are scared they are rude drivers. Really, it should be the other way around. We should not be afraid of setting a good witness and we should do our best to avoid a bad witness. We will be a witness one way or another.
Prayer: Lord, help me to be a witness in word and deed.
