Heidelberg 35 & 36

4But when the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5in order to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as children. (Galatians 4:4,5)

Thoughts: The catechism below does not concentrate on the virginity of the birth as much as on the humanity of the incarnation.  God remained God yet became human.  He was distinct except he was not born in sin nor did he fall into sin.  He stands before God innocent and yet mediates for me so that I might live.  He came in order that I might truly live now and truly live in the life to come.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for caring enough to come.  Thank you for caring enough to stand in the gap for me- to make a way across the wide gap between earth and heaven- my sin and the perfect place.

Q & A 35
Q. What does it mean that he “was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary”?
A. That the eternal Son of God, who is and remains true and eternal God,took to himself, through the working of the Holy Spirit, from the flesh and blood of the virgin Mary,3a truly human nature so that he might also become David’s true descendant, like his brothers and sisters in every wayexcept for sin.6
Q & A 36
Q. How does the holy conception and birth of Christ benefit you?
A. He is our mediatorand, in God’s sight,he covers with his innocence and perfect holiness
my sinfulness in which I was conceived.2
