John's Example

7As John’s disciples were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swayed by the wind? 8If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear fine clothes are in kings’ palaces. 9Then what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 10This is the one about whom it is written:
“ ‘I will send my messenger ahead of you,
who will prepare your way before you.’ (Matthew 11:7-10)

Thoughts: People came to see John the Baptist like going to see the circus.  But John was not there to entertain.  He was not easily swayed by the culture around him and he did not care about clothes or riches.  John was a special messenger- a prophet of the Messiah.  He was the last of the prophets presenting the culmination of the prophetic message.  His message of repentance and washing/dedication in baptism was a good forerunner of Jesus' message to repent for the kingdom of heaven- and the Messiah- is at hand.
John sets the example for us to not be easily swayed by popularity and riches, but instead to live for God.

Prayer:  Lord, help me to repent and focus on you.
