10In her deep anguish Hannah prayed to the Lord, weeping bitterly. 11And she made a vow, saying, “Lord Almighty, if you will only look on your servant’s misery and remember me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the Lord for all the days of his life, and no razor will ever be used on his head.”
Thoughts: The last of the judges were Eli the chief priest and Samuel. Eli was good but he had wicked sons who stole from the people and their gifts to God. The people knew he wouldn't be king. Hannah was a woman who could not have children. But her husband married another woman who gave him several- and she held this over Hannah's head. Hannah prayed that if God would giver her a son, she would give him back to God. There is some similarity with Mary. Mary humbled herself before God and gave her son to God's service. Hannah's song in 1 Samuel and Mary's song in Luke 1 are very similar. Each child is a gift from God with a unique purpose.
Prayer: Lord, life is a gift from you. Help me to use my life well and to humble myself before you.
