A Psalm of Thanksgiving

1Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth.
2Worship the Lord with gladness;
come before him with joyful songs.
3Know that the Lord is God.
It is he who made us, and we are his a ;
we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.
4Enter his gates with thanksgiving
and his courts with praise;
give thanks to him and praise his name.
5For the Lord is good and his love endures forever;
his faithfulness continues through all generations.  (Psalm 100)

Thoughts: This is a great Psalm reminding us to be grateful for what we have.  There are many studies that show gratitude is a sign of mental health and a well life.  It moves us away from self-centeredness.  Thanksgiving allows us to do real giving.  It brings joy and hope for life, enabling us to appreciate what we have instead of just looking at what we wish we had.
     When we are grateful, then the next question is to whom should we be grateful?   The Psalmist had no doubt.  We sing with joy to the Lord.  We know that He made us- and all we have is a gift.  When we are grateful, we want to come to Him in worship- we do not want to stay away.  The petty objections to worship (the nursery is too small, the sound system is not right, the songs are too slow, the preacher doesn't preach the way I want, the heat is a tad too hot, etc) melt away.  We do not worship (and should not stop worshiping) because of such things.  In our consumer culture, we think the church does not cater to our needs, and therefore we can just move on.  But then we miss the gratitude, and the joy of worship.  I remember Mr. Anderson in my Asheville church.  Mr. Anderson told me every week it was a great sermon- and always smiled.  My head was big until about a month later I realized Mr. Anderson was completely deaf and never heard a word I said.  I later communicated to him my puzzlement that he would say this each week when he never heard.  He said, I did not come to hear you, I came to worship God.  He appreciated my being there, and I appreciated being in His presence.  We are not to be entertained.  I have worshiped with saints outside underneath trees because they could not afford a building at all- but they smiled with gratitude to God for His salvation and love.  Of course, a church should do all it can to help people feel good in worship.  But there is a balance.
    We do not worship because the church is good or the people are good.  we worship as the Psalmist says, "Because the Lord is good.  His love endures forever and His faithfulness to every generation."  HE is worthy of our praise and gratitude.

Prayer: Lord, may my eyes be fixed on you, and not my own comfort.  Give me the ability to worship you wherever saints are gathered in your name, with gratitude in my heart.

SEVEN DAYS OF THANKSGIVING- Day 1

1Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth.
2Worship the Lord with gladness;
come before him with joyful songs.
3Know that the Lord is God.
It is he who made us, and we are hisa ;
we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.
4Enter his gates with thanksgiving
and his courts with praise;
give thanks to him and praise his name.
5For the Lord is good and his love endures forever;
his faithfulness continues through all generations. (Psalm 100)

Thoughts "Enter the Lord's gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise."  This is a phrase of someone excited and commanding others to be excited about worshiping God.  The gates were the gates of the Temple- or perhaps the golden gate of Jerusalem near the Temple.  The courts were the courts of the Lord where the people gathered to hear the Word of God, pray, and sing.  It is in these courts that we can sing to God's glory.  Why should we give thanks? 1) The Lord is God.  We can know that.  When we know God in our heart- then this is something for which we can give thanks.
2) He made us- that in itself is enough.  If we have life- give thanks for it while you can. 3) We are His- and He is ours.  There is this relationship of love between us and our Maker. We are not alone, but He watches over us.  4) vs. - His love endures forever- to every generation.  His love is new. Really, we have much to give thanks to the Lord.

Prayer: Thank you Lord for your great love.  Thank you that you gave me life and gave me eternal life- knowing you.  You make me overflow with joy and thankfulness.

11-18-13 Shouting and Thanksgiving

Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth.
    Worship the Lord with gladness;
    come before him with joyful songs.
Know that the Lord is God.
    It is he who made us, and we are his;
    we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.
Enter his gates with thanksgiving
    and his courts with praise;
    give thanks to him and praise his name.
For the Lord is good and his love endures forever;
    his faithfulness continues through all generations.

Thoughts: Singing and thanksgiving seem to go together.  When we are grateful we want to sing, give thanks, praise and yes... even shout.  We are at the end of American football- but it also applies to soccer.  People get excited scream and shout.  There seems to have to be some venue to do this.   I have heard many shout at marathons, at rallys for various causes, in bars, or even sales parties.  I remember sitting in the waiting room waiting for my grandchildren to be born (different occassions).  Each time I would hear a shout and "Yes!" from family members.  I knew the baby was born.
    The NIV translates 100:1 as "Shout to the Lord all the earth."  If we can shout about football, surely we can get excited about our relationship with God.  God has put shouting inside of us.  Every bet of good-natured excitement is a gift from God.  He makes the heights from which we jump (and the gravity and the risk of injury).  He makes the sinews and muscles and DNA that enables the best of us to break the record, to do the unthinkable and push the limits.
    However, being Presbyterian I keep my shouts a bit muffled about God.  But I am still reserving a shout for the really grand occasions of answered prayer.  I struggle with how shouting and good manners go together.  For I do not want to draw attention to myself- only to God.
Scripture gives no boundaries of when we are to shout or not.  Perhaps we should go to our prayer closet, close the door and shout at the top of our lungs to Him who is unseen (Mt. 6:6).  On the other hand- to only praise God in private is to tell the world we may get excited about football but not about God.  The Psalms and Chronicles speak of people shouting from rooftops and walls.  Some things are worth shouting about- so yes- "Shout to the Lord!"  But use your cultural mores in doing so.  Yet, push the boundaries of these.  Let your excitement about God overflow.  Thanks expresses itself the best in shouting and in song (which we will look at tomorrow).

Prayer:  Lord, use my lips, my voice, my gutteral cry and exclamation to bring you honor and praise.  You are worth my attention and excitement.  May my heart as well as my my mind and strength praise and grow in love for you!

11/22/12- Give Thanks to the Lord

Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth.
    Worship the Lord with gladness;
    come before him with joyful songs.
Know that the Lord is God.
    It is he who made us, and we are his;
    we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.
Enter his gates with thanksgiving
    and his courts with praise;
    give thanks to him and praise his name.
For the Lord is good and his love endures forever;
    his faithfulness continues through all generations. (Psalm 100)

(The pilgrims give thanks)

Thoughts: Thanksgiving is important and encouraged here.  In fact, this is almost a cheerleader Psalm revving us up to praise God.  Here we see a main purpose in worship- it is because we are thankful and that God is worthy of our praise and thanks.  This Psalm gives us a few main reasons why we should worship and be thankful:
1) He made us-
2) We are His own children.
3) God is good
4) God's love doesn't fade but lasts.
5) God is faithful in each time to each generation.

We are not alone- He is the shepherd whose eye is on the sheep.  God is the faithful shepherd who will not fail us, but provides for us, leads us, guides us, heals us, protects us.  He is worthy of our thanks and praise.
We do not speak only to ourselves.  We give thanks not simply to each other- but ultimately to the One who made all we see, and cares for us.

Prayer: This thanksgiving- this day- I praise you, O Lord.  You are worthy of my thanks- not just for health, family, and food, but because of who you are.  Thanks be to you, O Lord!
