7/15/13- The Unification of the Spirit

But whoever is united with the Lord is one with him in spirit (1 Corinthians 6:17)

There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; (Ephesians 4;4)

then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. (Philippians 2:2)

Thoughts: Every indication is that ideally the Holy Spirit is supposed to bring oneness to true believers.  But historically this has not necessarily happened.  The charismatic movement of the 1970s did not bolster unity.  It had the effect of two kinds of Christians- those who had the "baptism" of the spirit and those who did not.  The Pentecostal movement also brought a judgment on the church, but division,  One Pentecostal layman told me that I was not a Christian because I did not speak in tongues.  Yet the Spirit of Christ is in all those who believe in Christ.  When we get to heaven there will not be two rooms- one for the Pentecostal and another for those who were not Pentecostal.  The same Spirit is in all those around the throne of heaven.  It not only makes Paul happy (Phil. 2:2) when believers are like minded- it also makes Christ happy (John 17).

Prayer: Spirit, unite me to yourself, and unite me to others.
