6/5/13- The Head of the Church

Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. (Ephesians 5:23)

18 And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy.  (Colossians 1:18)

Thoughts: The head of the church is not the Pope, not the archbishops, not any Council,  not the ministers, not the elders or deacons, or vestry or board of stewards, not all the people together.  The Head of the Church is Christ.
The head is what directs the body- giving brain and thought- providing the basic senses of sight, hearing, smell, and the ability to communicate with the mouth.  A headless Church, a two-headed Church, or a wrong-headed Church brings chaos and soon lifelessness to the Church.  Jesus directs the Church and the body would do well to listen to what the Head has said.  The thinking and direction of the Church, therefore, does not come from experience, or science, or an eloquent leader, or some ideology, but from the Head of the Church--Christ.  The Church always goes head-first into life.  We follow the Head.
Because He is the head, and we follow Him together, then we are united.  The arm and the foot together follow the head.  The Head makes the body work in tandem, and we work best when we work not against each other but with each other.

Prayer: So, Lord, let me follow you, and seek you first.  Let me and the Church have wisdom to listen to and follow in the way you lead.
