15Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself? Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute? Never! 16Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? For it is said, “The two will become one flesh.” 17But whoever is united with the Lord is one with him in spirit. (1 Corinthians 6:15-17)
Thoughts: We are Christ's. We are Christ's body and soul. He is our Lord as well as our Savior. This is what it means to be a Christian. Therefore we should guard our soul, but also guard our bodies. To unite our bodies with that of a prostitute- without love, without commitment, with only animal instinct pollutes our bodies. We could not picture Christ being united with a prostitute, so why would we, as part of Christ's people- his body on earth- unite with a prostitute. Sex is a holy act to be reserved in a holy way- guarded by a commitment. This commitment is not just for an hour or a night or a month. It is not guarded by a feeling. It is guarded by a covenant commitment. The sexual act is seen as scripture as the two becoming one flesh- two people in the most intimate physical act they can have with another. We are one with Christ, and we should guard our union with Christ from the union with what Christ would find repugnant. Evil takes the holy and makes it meaningless, loveless, and tries to bring all acts and ourselves far away from God. This passage is a reminder to the Corinthians and to us who have so much temptation to sexual immorality around to be holy in body in spirit out of reverence for our first love.
Prayer: Lord, as temptation is all around me, keep me body and soul close to you.
