The Bible and Advent

12/16- Why is the Bible important- 2 Timothy 3:14-18
Read: “You have known the scriptures from infancy.  All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”  “All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the Prophet…” (Matt. 1:22)

Thoughts: The Bible is not just a history book recording what happened long ago.  Millions of people (even today) have found God in it, and have found that it teaches us about what we are believe concerning God and what God requires of us.  The Bible is like a telescope helping us to see the stars.  The stars are always there- and we know it.  But just as a telescope helps us see the stars better, so the Bible helps us see God better and understand what God wants us to do.  The stories in the Bible are not of perfect people.  Except for Jesus they all mess up and need God’s help.  The stories in the Bible are there to be examples and warnings to help us see what we should do and what we should avoid.  The Bible not only prophesied the coming of Christ many times, it also tells us about Him.   We would not know about Jesus or Christmas without the Bible.

Activity: Ask parents to tell their favorite verse in the Bible (if you don’t know one, then try to find one- google a few words you may know).  Then, if you have a telescope (or even better a “skyview app”) go out and look at the stars for a minute to show how the Bible clarifies things that are there for us.  [You might add for an advent flavor singing “Rise Up Shepherd and Follow.”]

“There’s a star in the east on Christmas morn.  Rise up shepherd and follow.  It will lead to the place where the Christ was born.
Rise up shepherd and follow.  Follow, follow, rise up shepherd and follow.  Follow the star of Bethlehem.  Rise up shepherd and follow.
If you take good heed to the angel’s words: rise up shepherd and follow.  You’ll forget your flocks, you’ll forget your herds.
Rise up shepherd and follow.  Follow, follow, rise up shepherd and follow.  Follow the star of Bethlehem.  Rise up shepherd and follow.”
