2/3/13- Divinity and Humanity of Christ

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God,and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made...14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. (John 1:1-14)

Thoughts: John 1 infers both the true humanity and divinity of Jesus as the Word who made the world but became flesh.  He was not a half man/half God, or just a super-enlightened teacher.  His death and burial were a sure sign of his humanity- for nothing is quite so human as pain and death.  The resurrection is a sure sign to confirm his teachings of his divinity that caused his arrest and death sentence.  He was not only fully human and fully God- but also truly human and truly God.  His humanity reminds us that he understands. His divinity reminds us that He overcomes.

Prayer: Lord, you are the right person- holding the human hands and teh divine hand at the same time.

B. Incarnation
This is the second great mystery of the Christian faith, affirmed by all Christians everywhere: that Jesus Christ is both truly God and truly human. As to His divinity, He is the Son, the second person of the Trinity, being of one substance with the Father; as to His humanity, He is like us in every
way but sin, of one substance with us, like us in having both a human soul and a human body. As to His divinity, He is eternally begotten of the Father; as to His humanity, He is born of the virgin Mary, conceived by the Holy Spirit. As to His divinity, His glory fills heaven and earth; as to His humanity, His glory is shown in the form of a suffering servant, most clearly when He is lifted up on the cross in our place.
