4/14/14- Jesus' Cares For His Mother

25Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.26When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to her, “Woman,b here is your son,” 27and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.  (John 19:25-27)

Thoughts: Jesus loved his mother to the end.  As the eldest son, he took care of his mother, and made sure she was cared for after his physical death.  He honored his mother in accordance with the fifth commandment.  In our day of generational wars, many are degrading the elderly saying they are not "making room" for the next generation.  This will get worst before it gets better.  Jesus teaches us to care for our parents when we are adults.
If you go to Ephesus in Turkey today, you will see a house on top of a mountain they call "Mary's house."  Ephesus was also the final place of John, "the disciple" mentioned here. Jesus did not shirk his earthly, physical responsibilities.  Legend has it that Joseph died when he was a teenager and that Jesus supported the rest of the family until he reached 30.  Jesus leaves us an example of someone who cared for His family.

Prayer: Lord, help me to remember and care for those you have placed around me.  Thank you for your example of love for family and kin.
