6I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you to live in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— 7which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ. 8But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God’s curse! 9As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let them be under God’s curse!
Thoughts: Paul was writing to the people of Galatia. Galatia is in what is now Turkey or Asia Minor. There is some debate whether Paul was writing to the city of Galatia or the region of Galatia (Georgetown SC is both a county and town). In the end it doesn't matter. It was a Roman province at the time settled by people from the area of France (Gauls- from which Galatia gets its name).
The problem was that Paul had talked of the gospel as being something you don't earn that is free. Now some people were saying that Christians need to be Jews in practice in order to follow Christ. f But Paul was saying, that is a different gospel. Today there are lots of different gospels out there. If anyone tells you that you must be good in order to get to heaven that is different. For the good news is that even though we fail and mess up- God still makes a way for us to get to heaven. It is not that we deserve heaven just by existence either. The truth is we don't deserve God's love but He loves us anyway- and He shows that in the person of Jesus Christ.
Prayer: Help me, Lord, to listen to you and follow you. Let me not be distracted by a different gospel.
