1Now about the collection for the Lord’s people: Do what I told the Galatian churches to do. 2On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with your income, saving it up, so that when I come no collections will have to be made. 3Then, when I arrive, I will give letters of introduction to the men you approve and send them with your gift to Jerusalem. 4If it seems advisable for me to go also, they will accompany me. (1 Corinthians 16:1-4)
Thoughts: There are some things here that set the foundation for Christian worship.
1) They met on the first day of the week. This was called "The Lord's Day" (Sunday). This was a change from worshiping on Saturday. Today the vast majority of Christian churches worship on Sunday- Why? The resurrection of Christ changes everything- calendars, wroship, life.
2) They took up a collection. This was part fo their worship . In thanks to God they gave.
3) They took up a collection for the poor in another place (Jerusalem). This was Missions.
Worship and giving are important for us. We should have a regular time to worship and to give, and it should not simply be for our own benefit or for those who may give back to us.
Prayer: Lord, give me grace to keep your day wholly with worship and giving of myself.
