The Church in Every Generation

20Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, 21to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen. (Ephesians 3:20-21)

Thoughts: This is a great, and often-overlooked benediction or exclamation.  Who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine?  Jesus is able.  It is His power that is at work within us to do this.  It is not that we are the source of power and simply by wishing or positive thinking we can accomplish miraculous things- it is His power in us.  He gets the glory for what He does in and through us, with us, and sometimes despite us.
     But to go with our theme of generation to generation, His glory in the church and in His person lasts forever.  For some, the church seems despised, crucified, weak, one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peal.  But the glory of God's beloved people lasts forever.  When the politicians are in some long forgotten book or obscure internet site; when the empire has disappeared; when our innovative devices are passe- the church's glory and the glory of Christ lasts.  We should not be embarrassed to invest ourselves in the church- though it is sinful, weak, torn by schisms and by heresies distressed.  The church is Christ's bride and we would do well to love what/who He does.  His glory and the glory of His bride- the church- lasts forever (from generation to generation-all generations). 


Prayer: Help me to know your power at work in me and in the church.
