5/1/13- Heidelberg Catechism Q. 87

Do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived! Fornicators, idolaters, adulterers, male prostitutes, sodomites, 10 thieves, the greedy, drunkards, revilers, robbers—none of these will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And this is what some of you used to be. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God. (1 Corinthians 6:9-11 NRSV)

Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men 10 nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. (1 Cor. 6:9-11 2011 NIV)

Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived:neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality,10 nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
(1 Cor. 6:9-11 ESV)

HEIDELBERG Q. 87. Can those who do not turn to God from their
ungrateful, impenitent life be saved?
A. Certainly not! Scripture says, “Surely you know
that the unjust will never come into possession of
the kingdom of God. Make no mistake: no
fornicator or idolater, none who are guilty either
of adultery or of homosexual perversion, no
thieves or grabbers or drunkards or slanderers or
swindlers, will possess the kingdom of God.”

PROPOSED 87 Q. Can those be saved who do not turn to God
from their ungrateful and unrepentant ways?
A. By no means.  Scripture tells us that no unchaste person,
no idolater, adulterer, thief, no covetous person, no drunkard, slanderer, robber, or the like will inherit the kingdom of God.

Thoughts: I am writing on this topic today because it is before the church.  The PCUSA is voting on this issue, and our presbytery's committee is voting on whether we will revise the Heidelberg Catechism- and the driving force without a doubt is Question 87 which leaves out the words "homosexual perversion" leaving this word/phrase out entirely.  The answer is a quote from 1 Corinthians 6:9-10.  But supposedly the original German of the catechism is closer to the proposed, but the 1 Cor. 6:9-10 is closer to the current translation.  Supposedly this is an effort to get the PCUSA in line with the RCA and CRC denominations who have revised this translation.  Translations are important, and our use of words either offend, or make a stand depending on our belief.  It is easy to say it just doesn't matter.  It is important to be precise in language and in belief- but knowing that all language and belief is limited and tainted- yet it is useful and all we have from God.  Our passage warns us "do not be misled."  For those who do not care, this is an important question- "Why should we not be misled?"  The difference is important.

Prayer: Lord, give us wisdom to do what is right and true according to your will- which is revealed in holy scripture and in Jesus Christ.

Below is the commentary on Q87 from Ursinus the primary author:
This Question naturally grows out of the preceding one; for since good works are the fruits of our regeneration since they are the expression of our thankfulness to God, and the evidences of true faith; and since none are saved but those in whom these things are found; it follows, on the other hand, that evil works are the fruits of the flesh that they are manifestations of ingratitude, and evidences of unbelief, so that no one that continues to produce them can be saved. Hence, all those who are not converted to God from their evil works, but continue in their sins, are condemned for ever, according to the following declarations of the word of God: “Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? be not deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, &c., shall inherit the kingdom of God.” “Of the which I have told you in times past that they which do such things, shall not inherit the kingdom of God.” “For this ye know; that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God; for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.” “He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.” (1 Cor. 6:9Gal. 5:21Eph. 5:561 John 3:14.)
We may also observe, that another reason for good works may be deduced from the consequence which results from evil works; viz., that all those who perform evil works, and continue in their wicked and ungrateful lives, cannot be saved, inasmuch as they are destitute of true faith, and conversion.

Other verses of interest:

But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the polluted, the murderers, the fornicators, the sorcerers, the idolaters, and all liars, their place will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.” (Rev. 21:8 NRSV)

But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.” (Rev. 21:8- NIV)

15 Outside are the dogs and sorcerers and fornicators and murderers and idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices falsehood. (Rev. 22:15 NRSV)

15 Outside are the dogs, those who practice magic arts, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters and everyone who loves and practices falsehood. (Rev. 22;15 NIV)

Sexual immorality of all kinds- (porneia) is listed as a sin that keeps us on the outside of faith.
