1On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, 2and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”
5His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” (John 2:1-5)
Thoughts: There are people who picture Jesus as a kill joy who did not appreciate human love and fun. But a Jewish wedding was a special event full of fun and laughter and the celebration of human love. Jesus,, in fact, enhanced the celebration. Mary knew he would, and she brought the problem up to him. Our task many times is to bring the problem to Jesus. It is not necessarily a problem of necessity. It was not "they have nothing to drink- not even water." But "They have no more wine." Jesus not only cares about the necessities of life- but also about the joy and celebration of life. Jesus is not out to take our joy away. He was accused of eating and drinking with sinners. But he was also accused of taking joy away- the pale Galilean (Hymn to Proserpine). The truth is Jesus was probably not a tea total-er but neither a drunkard. Jesus wants us to enjoy life, but not to be addicted to enjoyment.
Prayer: Lord, help me to lift my problems up to you- big or small.
