12I watched as he opened the sixth seal. There was a great earthquake. The sun turned black like sackcloth made of goat hair, the whole moon turned blood red, 13and the stars in the sky fell to earth, as figs drop from a fig tree when shaken by a strong wind. 14The heavens receded like a scroll being rolled up, and every mountain and island was removed from its place.
15Then the kings of the earth, the princes, the generals, the rich, the mighty, and everyone else, both slave and free, hid in caves and among the rocks of the mountains. 16They called to the mountains and the rocks, “Fall on us and hide usf from the face of him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb! 17For the great day of theirg wrath has come, and who can withstand it?” (Revelation)
Thoughts: The sixth seal, seems to be some kind of devastating war. A war that makes the earth shake violently, sun and moon turn dark and red, and the sky fly away and the heavens recede like a scroll. In reaction the kings and generals hide under the mountains in something like fall out shelters. A nuclear disaster would seem to fit this bill rather well. It is terrifying to think of such a nuclear-like catastrophe actually happening on the earth . Later it speaks of a third of the world's vegetation and water being burned up or made unusable. A nuclear-like catastrophe could do this. So could something like a chernoble disaster or an asteroid hitting the earth. But it appears this is made in the context of war- with generals. For the members of the seven persecuted churches, such a scene would draw both fear and a sense of relief that even kings and generals must answer to the Almighty.
Prayer: Lord, keep me in your care in the tough times and good times of life.
