15The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.”
16He told her, “Go, call your husband and come back.”
17“I have no husband,” she replied.
Jesus said to her, “You are right when you say you have no husband. 18The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true.” (John 4)
Thoughts: Jesus is not concerned about a theological debate with a strange woman. He is more concerned about the woman herself. He knew her. He knew she had multiple relationships and with that a lot of hurt and shame. In this culture, to not have a husband was to not have security or much income. Jesus noted that this woman needed help, forgiveness, grace, and God's spirit and truth. Jesus knows our hurts, our shame. We cannot hide it from Jesus. We might as well come face to face with Him. Jesus knows the truth and calls us to the truth.
Prayer: Lord, help me to see the truth in others. Give me your eyes to look at the lostness of people without you.
