Sing a New Song

1Sing to the Lord a new song,
for he has done marvelous things;
his right hand and his holy arm
have worked salvation for him.
2The Lord has made his salvation known
and revealed his righteousness to the nations.
3He has remembered his love
and his faithfulness to Israel;
all the ends of the earth have seen
the salvation of our God.
4Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth,
burst into jubilant song with music;
5make music to the Lord with the harp,
with the harp and the sound of singing,
6with trumpets and the blast of the ram’s horn—
shout for joy before the Lord, the King. (Psalm 98)

Thoughts: Five different times scripture tells us to "sing a new song" to the Lord (Psalm 33:3, 96:1, 98:1, 144:9; Isa. 42:10). In some ways the same old song should work.  God has worked in the past, and that should be good enough for us to put our trust in Him.  But it is a wonderful thing when God works now.  When God does a new thing- performs a new miracle, answers a new prayer, it elicits a new song.  In Psalm 98 is deep, sincere, overflowing joy that God has acted and revealed His love, power, faithfulness to His people.  He is worthy of adoration and thanksgiving for His great love.  Praise and music lifts up our heads.  It keeps us from naval gazing and thinking life is all about our comfort and situation.  Praise enables us to rise above circumstance and focus on the One who can save us.  Life changes.  Usually that is uncomfortable.  Sometimes that is devastating.  But God is still at work- enabling us to sing a new song to His praise.

Prayer: Lord, let my eyes be fixed on you in praise and song.  May my life, my words, my very thoughts be a song to you.
