Perspective

1Remember your Creator
in the days of your youth,
before the days of trouble come
and the years approach when you will say,
“I find no pleasure in them”—
11The words of the wise are like goads, their collected sayings like firmly embedded nails—given by one shepherd.b 12Be warned, my son, of anything in addition to them.
Of making many books there is no end, and much study wearies the body.
13Now all has been heard;
here is the conclusion of the matter:
Fear God and keep his commandments,
for this is the duty of all mankind.
14For God will bring every deed into judgment,
including every hidden thing,
whether it is good or evil.  (Ecclesiastes 12)

Thoughts: Wisdom in many ways consists of having perspective, being able to say no, and fearing God.  So the youth are encouraged to remember the Creator before they grow old.  Why?  Life is better with God. Joy is enhanced and worry is decreased; hope is made real and the blessing of God is real.  I once knew and 80 year old lady who was baptized.  She told me what many have said when they come to faith late: "I only wish I had this faith when I was younger."  Those who say life is better without God do not know the One who gave them life nor do they know why they are here or for what purpose.  Their lives are rudderless, and their vision is restricted to what is right in front of them (almost like someone walking in the dark).
The writer of this (traditionally Solomon or "The Teacher"), has been trying to find real lasting meaning.  He has sought meaning in learning, in pleasure, in work, in riches- but meaning eluded him.   The conclusion that he reaches is found in these last verses.  It could be said to do our duty.  The duty is to fear God and show it by keeping His commandments.  The reason the Teacher gives is that God is going to win and evil will not win.  If we turn away from God we will only be hurting ourselves.

Prayer: Lord, help me to fear you and keep your commandments today.
