Reliable Signs

32“Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. 33Even so, when you see all these things, you know that ite is near, right at the door. 34Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. 35Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.
  (Matthew 24:32-35)

Thoughts:  Jesus must have loved figs.  He was mad at one tree for not producing fruit- as a symbol that we are created not to just exist or be comfortable but to bear fruit for our Maker.  Here Jesus says to learn from fig trees about the ability to discern the times and seasons.  Jesus has given some things to look for (signs) of the end (earthquakes, wars and rumors of wars, famine, the gospel preached in every nation).  In some ways, we all should be ready to meet Him any time.  The signs Jesus gives are reliable.
But Jesus also said, "this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened."  It is true that within a generation, amazingly, Jerusalem was totally destroyed and the Temple was torn down stone by stone.  Yet there are prophecies in this chapter yet to be fulfilled (we wouldn't be reading them if they were).  Jesus has not come back in glory.  He has given time for His gospel to spread to every nation (true in 1989).  He is giving more time for people to hear and to turn to Him.  Jesus is more patient than any of us, and His timing is perfect.  But we can be sure as we can be sure of Jesus, that His words are true, reliable, and are not deceptive or fickle.

Prayer: Lord, help me to look for you and to be patient with you.  Let me have faith in you and your words.
