Psalm 14

 For the director of music. Of David.

1The fool a says in his heart,

“There is no God.”

They are corrupt, their deeds are vile;

there is no one who does good.

2The Lord looks down from heaven

on all mankind

to see if there are any who understand,

any who seek God.

3All have turned away, all have become corrupt;

there is no one who does good,

not even one.

4Do all these evildoers know nothing?

They devour my people as though eating bread;

they never call on the Lord.

5But there they are, overwhelmed with dread,

for God is present in the company of the righteous.

6You evildoers frustrate the plans of the poor,

but the Lord is their refuge.

7Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion!

When the Lord restores his people,

let Jacob rejoice and Israel be glad!

Thoughts: the fool is someone who is morally deficient- someone who is ethically challenged.  They only really fool themselves into thinking behavior and actions do not matter.  The fool- the one who thinks their actions do not matter- believe there is no God.  Why Because they do not WANT to believe.  It is a part of their will.  They would rather behave as they want than to choose God and try to live in His way.  That God holds us to account means that there is an ultimate right and wrong.
Often when people turn away from God- they give up a primary reason to be moral.  Religion is a strong motivation to be moral.  In a 2019 survey 44% of Americans say that belief in God is necessary to be moral.  Sociologists point out that even when people leave their faith behind they still carry its moral affects (they call them "religious drones").  But studies indicate that while there is a residue effect- like those who have left the faith give to charities more than those who never had faith- but much less than those who keep the faith.  Interestingly, those who have left the faith still strongly believe against cheating and unfairness (as oppoed to those who never had faith).
But God remembers the poor, the oppressed.  He is their refuge.  Religion has a great power to energize and motivate people to do good and to care for others and give happiness in life.
The hope is that God will restore faith- and restore God's people.
For those who feel morally discouraged.  Who look at the world and see evil only.  It is important to have the attitude of the Psalmist to pray that God will restore the right order again.

Prayer: Lord, it is so discouraging sometime to look at all the wrongs in the world.  We clearly see them on social media and TV, adultery, pornography, degrading of people into objects to be manipulated, addiction, people not wanting compassion but rather pride.  Thank you that in you there is at least a prayer for hope.  Help me to keep my eyes fixed on you.
