2/5/14- John 5:7-8 The need to pick up

6When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?” 7“Sir,” the invalid replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.”
8Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.” 9At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked. (John 5:7,8)

Thoughts: The man replied to Jesus' inquiry if he wanted to get well that he couldn't get into the water.  He was making excuses instead of answering the question.  Jesus would not argue with him, nor was he concerned to stand by him to move him when the water stirred.  Instead Jesus tied his healing to his action.  If he would pick up his mat, he would be healed.  Some of us need Jesus to tell us to get up and get going- quit making excuses.  Doubtless Jesus knew he may get in trouble with the leagalists of his day- for he asked him to pick up a mat during the Sabbath.  But healing took place because he needed to take responsibility- and picking up his mat was a sign of responsibility.

Prayer:  Lord, help me pick up my mat and get going.
