The Balance of Mind and Spirit
Thoughts: Paul does not simply say rational thinking is enough for worship. This is where some in my (Presbyterian) tradition mess up. There is an emotional and spiritual side to worship, and we should not be afraid to embrace that as well. We need to be spiritual as well as rational. When Presbyterians err by being over-rational it leads to skeptical non-mysterious, semi-legalistic Unitarianism, Deism, or a semi-Gnosticism. We need to leave room for the mystery, the singing in the spirit, the praying in the spirit that listens to God deep down. Praising God, singing to God, is important for it touches the deep inner reaches of the soul. Yet, we should also seek to edify others.
Prayer: Lord, help me to find a good balance between mind and spirit. Let me purssue you with both.

Words to Build up the Church
Thoughts: Paul is saying that worship needs to be edifying. Music is meant to be edifying, but if the notes are distinguishable, then it is noise. Music is meant to be understood and so is language. If a trumpet calls and people cannot understand it, they do not know whether to charge or retreat. Languages are meant to be intelligible as is speaking in worship. The gifts we should pursue are not the gifts that wow us as much as the ones that build up the church.
Prayer: Lord, use me to build up your church and to honor you.

Guidelines in Worship for Gifts of Talking
Thoughts: This compares speaking out in worship- especially for two gifts tongues and prophecy. But we all may learn from this. Worship is not simply to be a euphoric non-nonsensical thing. Yet, it is also not totally rational with no mystery. As one minister said, "Lord, let something happen today in worship that is not in the bulletin." God's Spirit moves and the Word comes in an understandable way. A word spoken in worship is best when it is intelligible and it builds up the congregation (vs 5). This is why Paul prefers prophecy to tongue-speaking. Prophecy is not just fore-telling but forthtelling. It is similar to preaching today- it is a word from the Lord for those gathered in worship. In worship, the reading of the scripture written is the best and confirmed prophecy around. The Spirit takes this Word and makes it real, applicable, illuminating it to the listeners. The Spirit also builds us up, strengthening us for the week ahead, encouraging the sick, downtrodden, sad and grieving. The Spirit brings life and edification in worship, as well as a sense of the Presence of God.
Prayer: Lord, let your Spirit be at work in me, building me up that I might serve you.

Love is the Greatest
Thoughts: There was a movie called "The Giver" that talked of a society built "after The Ruin." It was a walled in society where people took drugs to control their emotions and obey their leaders. There was safety and peace- no war. But also no emotion, no religion, no creativity, no hope and no freedom. In the end, what triumphs the need for peace and safety is love. Once love was understood and sought, freedom, creativity, faith and hope came. The show ends with a Christmas Carol, "Silent Night." There is a heavenly peace that comes when there is real love. Love is worth the risk. It is worth the sacrifice. It is worth the pain of loneliness when it is taken away. Love is the greatest gift, the greatest of faith and hope. God is love. He teaches us that all else is fickle and false. His love is worth everything.

Then Face to Face
Thoughts: Now things are not clear- it is like looking into a cloudy mirror. One day the purpose of things will be clear, God's hand in things will be clear- but not on this side. Now we know God, but not perfectly. But in heaven, things are a lot clearer- and we see God clearer. One day we will see God face to face and our understanding of His love will be clear too.
God is knowable- but only in part here. But when we get to heaven our knowledge of God will be clear. We can know God truly here, but that true knowledge is incomplete. This should give us a hope for heaven.
There is a great song called, "Further along We'll Know More About It."
Prayer: Lord, thank you for the hope that one day I will understand and appreciate your hand fully.

Love Here Compared to Love in Heaven
Thoughts: Too often when 1 Corinthians 13 is read people think of this as a- growing up and maturing in love as an adult theme. Love grows upon us. Once we thought love was sacrifice or flame of passion. But as we grow, we understand love is much much more. Love is not lust or puppy love. It is not a fascination of what the other person can do for you. God teaches us the value of love as faithful commitment and as described above in this chapter. Love is a gift to be treasured, that goes beyond the years and does grow with us.
The knowledge we have now compared to that which we will have in heaven is nothing. The love that we have now, compared to that which we will have in heaven is nothing.
I spoke like a child. Children stutter and cannot always get the right words out that they want to say. Tongues here on earth will seem so inadequate compared to what we will have in heaven.
I thought like a child. What is the difference between "thought like" and "reasoned like?" The first is understanding and the second is reasoned or arguing. Paul is comparing the understanding and ability to reason like prophecy and knowledge compared to heaven. I thought like a child- means to not think fully or completely. The prophets were never completely sure of their prophesies, and they were often clouded with nebulous statements. When we get to heaven prophecy will seem obsolete for we will see things as they should be seen.
I reasoned like a child. Our knowledge and ability to figure things out will seem so inadequate when we get to heaven. In heaven our love will be made complete but along with it our ability to communicate, to understand, and to know things. Complete love in the presence of God will do this for us. When we love God with our whole heart, soul, mind, and strength - we find that ultimately our heart, soul, mind, and strength are made complete in heaven.
Prayer: Lord, let my love for you grow and not cease. Let my love change and with it my ability to communicate, understand and know your love.
Love Lasts
Thoughts: Love goes on through eternity. Love also does not fail us- whereas other spiritual gifts will stop or disappoint. Love doesn't fail in that it is for everyone and not just for some.
Tongues- speaking in foreign languages will awe people. But that awe fades. In heaven everyone will understand everything- and there will be no need for tongues.
Prophecy/Knowledge- especially knowledge of God's will and the future will one day be given to all. So being able to discern God's will won't be a big deal. Being able to tell the future will not matter either. All such gifts are only partial and not perfectly clear here on this side anyway (vs. 9)
When completeness comes- that is- when we get to heaven- the partial stuff that seemed amazing at the time- fades in importance. Love, however, will always go on.
So Paul is saying, "Invest yourself in the greater gifts...Give yourself to what will last forever." To a church that was dividing out of pride and immorality the call was to love.
Prayer: Lord, may your love indeed triumph and make us new. Give us the vision to invest ourselves in love.

Love described
Thoughts: Love does not delight in evil. Love does not rejoice in the fall of another. Love does not relish in displeasing God or neighbor. Love is from God- the One who defines good. Instead love rejoices with the truth. Today many do not rejoice with truth. They wonder with Pilate- in the presence of the One who claimed to be the truth- "what is truth?" Truth is reality. Truth is not what we make it, and reality is not what we make it. Today we wish to bend truth to our ideology, when the measure of whether an ideology is good or not is how it fits into what we know about truth and reality. Then Paul says a quartet of what love always does.
1) It always protects- It never cowers away. Love will sacrifice its own safety in order to protect another . Love defends the one loved. I can take criticism of myself a lot easier than I can take criticism of my loved ones. Love protects those it loves.
2) Love always trusts- Love can overcome distrust even when burned. Forgiveness- true forgiveness means to be able to trust again. To say, "I love you but I don't trust you" is to say something that makes no sense.
3) Love always hopes- Love hopes for the best. Love holds onto the last drop and doesn't give up. Love is by nature positive hope instead of negative despair. Even in the face of the cross, Jesus loved us with hope.
44) Love always perseveres- Love does not give up on the One it loves. Love doesn't give in. It hangs in- for better for worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health. In other words, love does not let anything get in the way of maintaining love.
Prayer: Lord, let your love fill me . Protect me and let me trust in you. May your love always inspire me to hope and persevere.

Qualities of True Love 2
Thoughts: More qualities of true love:
2) Love is not self- seeking. It is other- seeking. Love means not having our own way. NLT translates this "Love does not demand its own way." Another translation (Holman) is "love is not selfish." Love centers itself in the other person and wants what is best for them.
3) Love is not easily angered. Other translations say love is not "easily provoked" or "annoyed" or "irritable." Love calms us down. Love gives us peace and purpose so that our boiling over point is not so low.
4) It keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not have a tally sheet that says: "I did this for you" and "you do this for me." Love lets it go, and forgives. It does not keep a list of why I should maintain a grudge.

Qualities of True Love
Thoughts: What love is like this? No human love is like this. This is idyllic love. This is God's unconditional love. Our love is to imitate this love. This is TRUE LOVE.
Love is patient. Love can wait. Love can put up with our idiosyncrasies. If you love someone you can be patient with them. God is patient with us. He does not zap us when we mess up- but waits and urges us to come back to Him.
Love is kind. Love goes the extra mile. Love goes out of the way. Love has mercy and soft-heartedness.
Love does not envy. Love does not seek to compete with the one who is loved. Love does not wish to take anything away from the one who is loved, but is generous and sacrificial to the one who is loved. God is not envious of us- but sacrifices Himself for us.
Love does not boast. Love does not seek to brag to get attention. Love focuses on the other person- not wanting attention for oneself.
Love is not proud. Humility and love go together. Being willing to give up oneself for the loved one- not holding anything back is a quality of true love.
If we are patient, kind, considerate, humble we are on the path to love.
Prayer: Lord of love, make me more loving- more like you.
A good exercise is to ask- "Am I patient? Am I kind? Am I not envious? Am I not boastful? Am I not proud?" Or, you could put your name where the word "love" is. Thus: ____ is patient; ___ is kind...

Gifts for All
Thoughts; Each of us who believe are a member of the body of Christ. We are members. As I indicated before, this is originally a Christian concept. Then Paul lists a number of gifts that members have. This is not an exhaustive list. Romans 12:6-8, Eph. 4;11 and some others. The point is that not everyone has all the gifts. We need each other. The greater gifts are better and more available to all people- like the greatest gift of love.
Prayer: Lord, help me to desire the greatest gift of your Holy Spirit- the gift of love.

The Interdependence of the Body
Thoughts: In the church, we all need each other. No one can say we don't need each other. We all need one another- not just to do more good. We all need each other to help each other be better. God honors the dishonorable. God also wants there to get along and not be divided from each other. We are dependent in sympathy too. If one person suffers, we are all called to suffer. We are called to weep with those who weep and rejoice with those who rejoice.
Prayer: Lord, keep me from feeling I do not need anyone. Help me to have a good perspective in loving others

Not Knowing Our Role
15Now if the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. 16And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. 17If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? 18But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. 19If they were all one part, where would the body be? 20As it is, there are many parts, but one body. 1 Corinthians 12:15-19
Thoughts: Not only does this passage tell us that everyone has a part to play, but that even if we do not know we have a part to play, we still play a part. In our culture we emphasize knowing as controlling. It is the grace of God that we don't have to know we are useful to be useful and fulfill a purpose. God arranges us as part of His tapestry. God has a purpose for us right where we are- whether we realize it or not. We are all different, and that helps the body in the end. Everyone has a role to play .
Prayer: help me to understand my value does not depend on whether I know my. Laure or if others understand my worth. My value is found in you my Maker and purpose-giver.

Membership in the True Body
Thoughts: The idea of membership gets its true beginning in this passage. Scholars say that the word "membership" was rare before this. The idea is that we who believe are members of the body of Christ- we belong together and we belong to Christ. It is not an institutionalization thing- it is a way to publicly and openly have our lives reflect our hearts. When we are baptized, we are initiated. Baptism is like the invisible tattoo that we have been affected by faith. Paul is also emphasizing the "oneness" of the church. The true church, the invisible church is made up of those who truly believe. It is not a matter of which denomination you are of- such things are human and frail constructs. Baptism is not to a denomination- it is to Christ- and there is a unity that transcends denominations, church walls, and petty statements. Denominations may fail, but the kingdom of God will never fail. The true body is not made up of one part or even many parts- not even a 1.2 million part. The true body of Christ is made up of all parts that believe and show that belief in baptism. Baptism and joining the church is an automatic sign of unity. So if a Jew joins with particular beliefs and a Gentile joins with a different set of beliefs there is still is unity (vs. 13). If there are people with different political or economic beliefs there is oneness too (slave or free- vs. 13). I would hope that if there are cultural differences and perspectives that the faith could transcend these too. Membership is important. It means you belong- not just to each other or to the Church- but to Christ. To neglect or forsake membership means to neglect or forsake your family, the children of Christ. But despite our choices, we can never be un-baptized. The faith has always affected us- whether we claim it or not. The Lord wants us to claim our faith and to stay united despite the unbelief and ideologies who would love to see us divided. Churches may be divided, and denominations may be broken but the body of Christ is never truly divided. Once you have drunk of the true Spirit you cannot un-drink it (13). Christ is never divided. Christ prayed that we would be one (Jn. 17). Being truly a member of the body- a bodypart of the body- should inspire us to play our part- fulfill our role, and use our particular gifts to build up and encourage the body more than seek to be encouraged ourselves.
Prayers: Lord, give me grace to value my being part of your body- a member for you.

Different Gifts for a Common Good
Thoughts: Everyone has a gift- but it is not so that we can brag or boast. Each gift is given to use for the common good. It is like God is putting a puzzle together to do His work, and we alone have a piece of the puzzle that no one else has. If we refuse to plug into the church, God's body, the church is weaker and we are not fulfilling our purpose.
Some have a message for people. Some have great, unwavering faith that encourages the weak. Some are healers- smoothing things out and being used by God's Spirit to help people through answered prayer. God does indeed heal today. Prophecy is not just telling the future, but speaking forth the Word that God gives with power. Some people have gifts of discernment. I have met someone who has this gift. They can see through false masks right through to the heart. Tongues is the ability to speak or interpret languages for communication of the message of the Spirit. Today, we downplay all gifts of the Spirit as if they are not needed. But we downplay God as if He is not needed either. The Spirit is still at work around us if we will but open our eyes.
Prayer: Lord, may your Spirit be at work in me. Help me to discern my gift and use it for the good of your kingdom and your Church.

Jesus is Lord
Thoughts: Corinth was a place where the Spirit was at work, evidenced in certain "gifts of the Spirit." Paul was trying to help them understand what is going on and what the people could and couldn't say and be faithful to the Gospel. The Spirit doesn't inspire us to curse Jesus. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Christ. The name of Jesus is held in holiness and reverence. On the other hand, the Spirit inspires us to proclaim Christ not just as a good person, but as Lord- worthy of our following. All Romans were to proclaim that Caesar is Lord. But to refuse to call Caesar Lord but call Jesus is Lord instead is astounding and makes a great statement.
Prayer: Jesus you are my Lord, worthy of following. I give myself to you.

Judgment and the Lord's Supper
This passage tells us to examine ourselves, lest we drink judgment on ourselves. Some have taken this to extremes. In the old American and Scottish Presbyterian churches the supper was limited to once a quarter in order for the elders to come and visit and examine your willingness and worthiness to eat and drink at the Lord's Table. The problem with that, as Luther acknowledged is that none of us is worthy. No one deserves the body and blood of our Lord sacrificed for us. But the other part is that the supper should be reserved for those who have faith in Christ and His sacrifice for us. God cares if we celebrate the remembrance of His Son's sacrifice as if it were an opportunity to simply indulge our animal-like appetites without self-control. Self control (like waiting to eat or drink at the proper time- not just rushing in and out partaking so that we can check it off of our to do list) is important. Self control has a lot to do with holiness. It distinguishes us from the animals who have to eat the food set before them. It shows respect for the one we are controlling ourselves for- in this instance God or the neighbor we are eating the Supper with. Self-control, respect and holiness go together, but they are made much more holy remembering the love that makes them more than regulations. The love of Christ- shown in His death on the cross to set us free- is to be treated with respect. In our day in America we talk so much about love, but we have so little respect or self-control toward love. The Lord's Supper is a Eucharistic- thanksgiving event. But it isalso a visible sign of God's invisible love- to be treated with respect and holiness.
