4On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. 5For John baptized witha water, but in a few days you will be baptized withb the Holy Spirit.” (Acts 1:4-5)
Thoughts: Jesus was raised from the dead. He continued to eat with them- not in order to live- he had already defeated death- but eating enhances fellowship. Jesus was having fellowship with them at the table. Jesus was prophesying that the Holy Spirit would come upon them in a special way. In water baptism there was a cleansing from sin, but in the baptism of the Spirit there is a filling with God's presence, joy, love, and hope. Christians today need to be cleansed from sin, but we also need the fullness of God's joy to move us forward in our growth and love for Him. Sometimes we must pray for, seek, and wait for God;s filling. The life of Jesus brings the life of the Spirit that fills us.
Prayer: Lord, may your Holy Spirit fill me and empower me to do your will.
