He3idelberg 99 & 100- God's Name

12Above all, my beloved, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath, but let your “Yes” be yes and your “No” be no, so that you may not fall under condemnation. (James 5:12)

Thoughts: We take it (foolishly) for granted that God has to listen to our prayers and that God has to let us into heaven just by our existence.  We do not see the importance of our sin- and we treat God with disrespect in this way.  We should pray in the name of Jesus- that is like a key a password for access to the Father's blessing.  But when we curse Him it is like a sure shutting out- we are in effect asking God to not listen to us when we curse in His name.  Jesus encouraged us to call God endearing names- "Abba, Father."  But cursing God's name is a certain way for Him to turn away with a deaf ear.
Q & A 99
Q. What is the aim of the third commandment?
A. That we neither blaspheme nor misuse the name of God by cursing,1 perjury,2 or unnecessary oaths, nor share in such horrible sins by being silent bystanders.4
In summary, we should use the holy name of God only with reverence and awe,so that we may properly confess God,pray to God,and glorify God in all our words and works.8
Q & A 100
Q. Is blasphemy of God’s name by swearing and cursing really such serious sin that God is angry also with those who do not do all they can to help prevent and forbid it?
A. Yes, indeed. No sin is greater or provokes God’s wrath more than blaspheming his name. That is why God commanded it to be punished with death.2
