Let the Children Come to Jesus

Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these." (Matthew 19:14)

Thoughts: This is a general principle that Jesus is giving- it is not just a one time deal.  He gives a thought that goes beyond this situation- "the kingdom heaven belongs to such as these."  That is the humble, helpless, powerless, poor. Earthly kingdoms may belong to the rich, powerful, beautiful, and athletic.  But the heavenly kingdom is available to any who humble themselves before God.  You cannot be a part of the kingdom unless you humble yourself like a little child.
The secondary principle is that we should do all we can to smooth the way for children to come to Jesus.  We should not hinder or try to stop them.  In fact, when children want to do anything but what is really important- like worship their Creator- we are called to remind them of who is important.  The disciples of Christ may not make things easy for children to come, but when they hinder them, they are not answering their call from Christ.  Children should really be a priority for the disciples of Christ.  This means that we should be willing to sacrifice our comfort for children to come to Jesus- the future of the faith and of these particular children.

Prayer: Lord, help me to care for children more than I do.
