10/14/12- Loving and Listening

We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands. 4 The man who says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But if anyone obeys his word, God’s love is truly made complete in him. This is how we know we are in him: 6 Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did. (1 John 2:3-6)

Thoughts: This is not saying "God will love me if I keep His commands."
Yet God's love is unconditional. It is not about us, but about what Jesus has done for us. This passage is talking about the fruit of our relationship with God, not the root of our relationship with God. Our love for God shows itself by how we listen to Him. If we say we are a Christian but do not care what God says, then we have a false assurance. Love for God shows in our willingness to listen to Him.
We are called to walk as Jesus did, knowing He also walks with us.
