8/15/13- More than a Butler

10 “They are your servants and your people, whom you redeemed by your great strength and your mighty hand.11 Lord, let your ear be attentive to the prayer of this your servant and to the prayer of your servants who delight in revering your name. Give your servant success today by granting him favor in the presence of this man.” I was cupbearer to the king.

Thoughts: Nehemiah was appealing to the link between God and His people.  He was asking for mercy while at the same time recognizing God's power and ability.      Nehemiah was providentially in a great place- much like Esther was to the Persian king as the Queen.  Nehemiah was the cupbearer- one of the most trusted men in the kingdom.  The cupbearer was not just a butler but a poison tester who would risk his own life and safety for the king.  Because the cupbearer was so close to the king physically, they often became the confidant of the king.  They also were paid well for their duty.  Later Nehemiah used his money to help the financial situation of his people.  So Nehemiah asked for favor and blessing from God.  He was not just leaving blessing up to chance and ability- He called on God for help.  So we too should never rely solely on our own ability, talent, or even being in the right place at the right time- but we should ask God for our success.

Prayer: Lord, be attentive to your church that bears your name.  We need  your forgiveness and mercy as well as your favor and blessing.
