8/5/13- Harmony is Important

19 speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. (Ephesians 5:19,20)

Thoughts: Music is supposed to bring harmony.  The Holy Spirit is also supposed to bring harmony and unity.  Two of the greatest gifts of God- yet in many churches how we view the spirit and how we view music can lead to divisions.  I knew of one minister who had been in his church about twenty years but was fired for the music he preferred in worship.  Contemporary, hip-hop Christian, oldy goldy hymns (Old Rugged Cross, In the Garden), classical hymns all bring great meaning and inspiration.  Because such music touches our hearts to remove them or to threaten to play a different kind of music can get someone's dander up.  If we expect to be inclusive of people who think differently, look differently, can we not be inclusive of people who have different musical tastes.  Must our music be uniform to the point of excluding those who have different taste in music?  In heaven there will be different and better music than anything we can produce here.  God is not listening so much for his favorite song- as for His people singing His praise in harmony and love.  Music is blessed when we make an effort to appreciate each other.

Prayer: Lord, may my life, my music reflect your love and grace.
